Muhammad in the Bible, Torah, and Qur’an

Coexist: Islam, Judiasm, and Chritianity

The clash between Muslims, Christians, and Jews resembles the feud that exists between siblings. They all come from the same father (Abraham) and follow the same prophets of the same God, yet ironically the true enemies of God have succeeded in dividing us by forcing us to focus on our differences rather than our staggering similarities.

بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Say ye: We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us, and to Abraham, Isma’il, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets from their Lord: We make no difference between one and another of them: And we bow to Allah. [Qur’an 2:136]

For more than fourteen centuries, scholars from Judaism, Christianity and Islam have been discussing whether or not the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) could have indeed been a true prophet from the One True God. Was he the long awaited “Messiah” the Jews have been waiting for so many centuries? Was he the unlettered Prophet prophesied in the Old Testament?

Let us examine the passage describing the roots of the next prophet:

We read ‘And the Gentiles shall come to thy light’, and that means this Holy Prophet would arise among the Gentiles and his Light would fill his place where the nations would come and visit. [Isaiah 60:3]

The Children of Israel have always believed the prophethood must stay within the bloodline of the Twelve Children of Israel (starting from the children of Jacob, who is the son of Isaac). Anyone who is not of the Children of Israel is known to the Jews as a “Gentile.” The verse above says there will be an exception of the coming Prophet who will not be from the Children of Israel, but rather a Gentile.

Muhammad was a gentile because he came from the lineage of Ismael, making him an extraordinary gentile of high stature:

And as for Ishmael (son of Abraham), I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, I will make him a great nation. [Genesis 17:20]

Ishmael was the ancestor of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) through Kedar, the second son of Ismael. The lineage of Muhammad (pbuh) is even further illustrated by the Bible:

Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s handmaid, bare unto Abraham: And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations. [Genesis 25:12-16]

Next thing is that the Bible paints the scenario in which the Divine Revelations decends on the prophesized prophet:

And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. [Isaiah 29:12]

What is remarkable is that the very first word of the Qur’an revealed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was READ! He told Angel Gabriel that he cannot read. The angel again told him to READ! He says again to the angel that he cannot read. And a third time the angel told him:

READ! In the name of thy Lord Who createth. [Qur’an 96:1]

The Bible describes the coming prophet so that he can be recognized:

I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. [Deuteronomy 18:18]

The claim of Islam is that the Qur’an is the literal, unchanged word of God. So as the Bible foretold, God had literally put His words (the Qur’an) on the tongue of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

It’s common knowledge that chapters of the Qur’an starts with “Bism Allah Al Rahman Al Raheem”, which means “In the Name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Compassionate.” The Bible foretold of this prophecy:

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him. [Deuteronomy 18:20]

When the Bible says the phophet will “speak in my name,” this is what Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has done by saying “Bism Allah Al Rahman Al Raheem” before reciting the words of God (the Qur’an). It was required of him and still is today when Muslims recite any part of the Qur’an.

The above proofs are very explicit without the need for further translations. However, there is a wealth of truth that exists in the original languages of the Bible and Torah that were intentionally or ignorantly lost in translation:

His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem. [Songs of Solomon 5:16]

In the Hebrew Torah though, it exactly reads like this:

Hikko Mamittakim we kullo Muhammadim Zehdoodeh wa Zehraee Bayna Jerusalem.

Here is the exact Hewbrew text in case you can read Hebrew:

In the English translation, the name of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was translated as “altogether lovely”, which is the true translation of the name “Muhammad”. Was it out of malice or ignorance that a person’s name was translated from Hebrew to English. Never would you translate a name to another language because that is someone’s name. In the Old Testament in Hebrew, the name of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) still exists today! Don’t take my word for it, go to your library and pick up a transliteration of the Hebrew Torah. It is worth noting that in the Hebrew language “im” is added for respect. Similarly im is added after the name of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Next I would like to examine the scriptures written in the original Aramaic language of Jesus. The word “Christianity” did not exist in the time of Prophet Jesus. So what religion did he call himself? You will be surprised to know that the word Muslim is not a new word found only in the Qur’an. Notice the Aramaic words in red, pronounded “Shalam”, keeping in mind its Arabic equivilant is “Salaam”, the root word of Muslim (one who submits):

bible-ar1

Jesus further demonstrates that he has completed his work as commanded by Allah leaving nothing undone which also shows that he was a true Muslim (one who submits), a characteristic which only fits the character of a prophet.

bible-ar3

Finally, before Jesus departs from this Earth, he leaves behind something which can only be understood if read in his native tongue of Aramaic. In John 14:27, we read:

bible-ar4

As you can see above, Jesus departed with the same phrase Muslims today depart and greet with: Assalaam Alaikum.

To conclude in building the bridge between Muslims, Christians, and Jews, I would like to quell instigations created by war elites and the media to divide us. Contrary to common belief, Muslims greatly revere the prophets and books of Christians and Jews. As a matter of fact, Moses and Jesus are more referred to in the Qur’an than Muhammad (pbuh)! Allah repeatedly points out the bond between the People of the Scriptures:

Allah hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture with truth, confirming that which was (revealed) before it, as Allah revealed the Torah and the Gospel. [Qur’an 3:3]

That which We have revealed to you of the Book is the Truth confirming what was (revealed) before it: for Allah is assuredly with respect to his servants well acquainted and fully-Observant. [Qur’an 35:31]

This Qur’an is not such as can be produced by other than Allah; on the contrary it is a confirmation of (revelations) that went before it and a fuller explanation of the Book wherein there is no doubt from the Lord of the Worlds. [Qur’an 10:37]

And the Jews say the Christians follow nothing true, and the Christians say the Jews follow nothing true; yet both are readers of the Scripture. Even thus speak those who know not. Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that wherein they differ. [Qur’an 2:113]

Say O People of the Scripture! Ye have naught (of guidance) till ye observe the Torah and the Gospel and that which was revealed unto you from your Lord. That which is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) from thy Lord is certain to increase the contumacy and disbelief of many of them. But grieve not for the disbelieving folk. [Qur’an 5:68]

And argue not with the People of the Scripture unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our God and your God is One, and unto Him we surrender. [Qur’an 29:46]

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CODEPINK Protests Netanyahu inside AIPAC Gala
Activists call for end to siege on Gaza and illegal settlements

Washington D.C.: Shortly after announcing Israel’s commitment to defense in his address to the annual American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) Gala, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was disrupted by a demonstrator.  Rae Abileah, 27, from Half Moon Bay, CA, jumped onto AIPAC Executive Director Howard Kohr’s private table alongside the stage and unfurled a pink banner that said “Netanyahu: Build Peace Not Settlements!”  Abileah shouted, “Lift the siege of Gaza! No illegal settlements!” as she was forcefully removed from the building.  A second disruption came moments later from Joan Stallard, from Washington, DC, who shouted, “Stop the settlements!”

CODEPINK’s protests of the policies of AIPAC during their national conference this week have included daily morning protests, staging of a checkpoint for attendees, an afternoon press conference announcing the launch of a city-wide boycott of products illegally made in the settlements, and the release this morning of a spoof press release from AIPAC announcing that the organization was calling for a settlement freeze.  Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 23, at noon CODEPINK is planning to build a settlement (including homes and beds) inside Senator Schumer’s and Senator Lieberman’s offices (Hart Senate Building, offices 313 and 706).

CODEPINK condemns AIPAC’s silence on the illegal settlements and calls for continued military aid to Israel, which last year was used in the attack on Gaza, breaking international law.  With the new tensions between the Obama administration and the Israeli government over settlements, activists believe that now is the time to stop AIPAC from dictating US foreign policy in the Middle East.  “The timing is right to the break the detrimental influence of AIPAC, which demands unquestioning public and financial support for Israeli despite its illegal actions,” said Rae Abileah, a national organizer with CODEPINK and a Jewish-American of Israeli decent.

American Jewish peace activists are outraged at the influence that AIPAC has on U.S. policy. “AIPAC supports policies of aggression that damage Israel’s reputation, harm innocent Palestinians, and contribute to making America less safe in the world,” said Jewish-American activist Medea Benjamin of CODEPINK. ”

16-year old boy shot dead by Israeli snipers

Village of Iraq Burin and Bacha settlement in background.

Latest News, Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign, March 20th, 2010

This afternoon the Israeli military killed 16-year old Mohammad Qadus from Iraq Burin, a village south of Nablus, with a live round on his heart. A second youth, Asaud Qadus, 19 years old, was critically injured after being shot in the head. Mohammad was trying to carry Asaud to safety when he was hit.

Today, just as every Saturday in the last few weeks, settlers from the settlement of Bracha attacked the village of Iraq Burin. The community of around 600 people has lost over 100 dunum to the settlers who claim more land.

Eyewitnesses report that today the number of settlers and Israeli military was unusually high. At around noon, settlers and soldiers invaded the village.

People stepped out of their homes to defend their village and a struggle ensued. The military took up positions with several jeeps at strategic points and chased the youth in the streets of Iraq Burin.

They shot tear gas, sound grenades and life ammunition randomly at homes and people. Asaud Qadus was shot by live ammunition in the head. Young Mohammad ran to carry the injured youth to safety but was himself targeted in the heart by live ammunition.

Medics and ambulances were prevented from entering the small community. Only after a long time both youth were allowed to be carried out of the village and to a hospital in private cars. Mohammad was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital in Nablus while Asaud is still in critical condition.

Two people were arrested but no further details are known about them yet.

Shoot-to-kill policy

Mohammad was the latest victim shot while protesting since Bassem Abu Rahmah, 31, was killed by a high velocity tear gas canister in Bi’lin last April. His death comes only two weeks after Ehab Barghouti, a 14-year-old boy from Nabi Saleh village near Ramallah was shot in the head with a rubber-coated steel bullet by the Israeli military on 5 March 2010. He is still in critical condition.

Killing children with live ammunition is not an accident, It is a crime. Of the 16 people killed by the Israeli military in connection with anti-Wall protests since 2002, half were under the age of 18.

The pattern of killings related to anti-Wall protests shows that the occupation forces engage in killings cycles: during a wave of killings in 2004/2005 8 were killed, then again between July 2008/ April 2009 6 were killed. This is very likely just the start of yet another wave of killings.

This systematic criminal policy against our people is a war crime and supports the settlers in stealing Palestinian land. Israel will continue with its shoot-to-kill policy against our children and youth until the international community starts to hold it accountable for its crimes.

Al-Azhar’s Future: A Chance for Alternative Movements? (VIDEO)

March 18, 2010 By Anonymous Leave a Comment

300px-Al_Azhar1

Last week, Sheikh Mohamed Sayed Tantawi, Alazhar University’s top cleric, passed away of a heart attack at the age of 81. He was indeed a very controversial figure both within Egypt, as well as the Muslim world as a whole. As Egypt scurries to find a replacement for Sunni Islam’s most prestigious seat of Islamic learning, many are wondering what this means for the future of Al-Azhar, its role, and whether it has been hijacked by the state.

Interesting tidbit of which I was previously unaware, and ashamedly so: the seat which Sh. Tantawi held, as the leader of Al-Azhar University, is actually a government post. Basically, the leader is a presidential appointee, instead of one who is chosen based on a general, scholarly consensus, as according to the traditions of Islam. This has been the case since the ’60s when Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the university and made civil servants (public employees) of its entire staff. Yep, the whole of Al-Azhar University is on the Egyptian government’s payroll, so now you know where ridiculous religious rulings like the “Wall of Shame” fatwa come from. Indeed, Al-Azhar University is cleverly used as a mouthpiece for the Egyptian government.

Regardless of what your personal views of Sh. Tantawi are, one thing seems to be very clear: his controversial, and at times, provocative nature has only served to strengthen the general, predominant view in Islam which opposes the idea of a single individual scholar with superior, unquestionable status (ie: “The Pope” syndrome). When just about anyone, from the most renowned university professor to the country-bound shepherd tending his flock, can criticize and ridicule a fatwa given by the highest authority in Islam, then the case for an Islamic super-authority is completely delegitimized, and rightfully so!

But the question still remains: will this be an opportunity for alternative movements to come into play? Or will it once again, be more of the same? Between this and the run up to the 2011 presidential election (and El-Baradei’s very public fight for candidacy), it looks like it will be a couple of very interesting years in Egyptian politics!

Remembering Rachel Corrie (VIDEO)

March 16, 2010 By Anonymous Leave a Comment

n187909431_7472

Today is March 16th, 2010 and although this day may not carry a sentimental value for some, it carries the lasting memory of a true hero for many others. Today is considered Rachel Corrie Day in many peoples’ minds across the world.

Rachel Corrie was a non-violent peace activist fighting for Palestinian human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Exactly 7 years ago, she was killed by an Caterpillar bulldozer operated by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) while trying to prevent the IDF from demolishing the home of a local Palestinian pharmacist, Samir Nasrallah. She was 23 years old at the time.

Rachel had taken a year off from school to travel to the Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada to help the helpless in the Palestine. She used her body (and her life) as a shield against the unjustified oppression carried out by the state of Israel, on the Palestinian people. Since her death, many solidarity actions take place around the world on this, the Rachel Corrie Day of Conscience.

Just last week, her family, after waiting 7 years, has finally received its day in an Israeli court to hear the testimonies of those present at her killing, and hopefully receive the justice they deserve by placing accountability on those responsible. They also understand that this is an opportunity that hundreds and thousands of Palestinians never receive, every day. We wish them all the best in their quest for peace and justice for their daughter, for the Palestinian people, as well as all oppressed peoples around the world.

On this day of conscience, I’m thinking about the bravery and courage of the young Rachel Corrie, and how her story should inspire us all to always do what is right in the face of oppression, regardless of our fears and uncertainties about the future. On this day, we keep the memory of Rachel alive.

In honor of her memory, I’d like to share a video of a speech Rachel gave when she was in the 5th grade. It is truly heartwarming, inspiring, and a clear predictor of her heroic nature as an adult.
